Guide on mobility and health

Client: Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM)

Scientific evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates the profound impact of urban design and the built environment on human health. This influence extends directly to physical and mental wellbeing as well as lifestyle choices and environmental quality. Despite this compelling evidence, health considerations are often neglected in urban planning processes. Mobility planning emerges as a crucial tool for integrating health into urban design, as it can encourage active transportation like walking and cycling, enhance public transport accessibility, and mitigate the adverse effects of car-centric infrastructure. By prioritizing these elements, cities can create healthier, more sustainable, and ultimately more livable environments for their residents.

This guide provides a clear methodology for integrating health into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans.

Methodology

  • Literature review: a comprehensive review of existing scientific literature identified 26 Urban Health Determinants specifically related to mobility and transport, categorized into five key areas (urban environment, walkability, cycling, public transport, and motorised traffic and parking).
  • Stakeholder consultation: a survey was conducted among prominent local and regional mobility-related organisations to gather further insights.

Results

The findings were translated into a practical guide for integrating health considerations into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). The guide offers a roadmap for municipalities to create healthier environments by:

  • Establishing objectives and criteria for healthy mobility: the guide outlines clear goals and standards for promoting active transportation, improving public transport, and reducing motorised traffic.
  • Providing a methodology for integrating health into SUMPs: a step-by-step framework guides the diagnosis, proposal development, and monitoring of health-related aspects within mobility plans.
  • Showcasing real-life case studies and support tools: practical examples and resources are provided to facilitate the implementation of health-oriented mobility strategies.

By adopting the recommendations and strategies presented in this guide, cities can take proactive steps towards fostering healthier and more sustainable urban environments.
