Subirats is a municipality facing various social and health challenges related to low population density and an ageing population.
The Subirats Urban Health Strategy was developed to address the relationship between urban environments and the health of residents. This relationship is supported by scientific evidence, but often overlooked in urban planning. The strategy aims to define short, medium, and long-term interventions in urban areas to respond to the identified health needs.
Methodology
The project’s approach involved an initial diagnosis of the current situation in Subirats by analysing: available data on resident’s health, a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the urban environment (field work and site visits), analysis of existing planning policies and documents, as well as input from citizen participation, collected through surveys and interactive workshops. These results were analysed and combined to identify key priority areas for urban transformation and improvement.
Urban Health Strategy
The drafting of the strategy involved establishing priority lines of action based on the identified problems and challenges. Specific proposals were defined for each of the analysed population areas. These proposals were then synthesised into a global strategy for action, including:
- 4 dimensions: green infrastructure, connectivity, activities and services, and urban planning and policy.
- 12 objectives
- 36 actions with implementation criteria, recommendations, and monitoring indicators.
The Subirats Urban Health Strategy provides a comprehensive plan to improve the urban environment that puts the health and wellbeing of its residents at its core.
