We collaborated with KUMA Architecture & Urban Design to draft the Study of Opportunity Spaces for health and adaptation to climate change, a project for the City Council of Castellón de la Plana. The objective of our work has been to identify public spaces with potential to integrate solutions aimed at improving urban health and climate change adaptation, while aligning with the urban agenda and priority planning policies for the city.
After an exhaustive analysis process, different spaces of 5 different typologies have been selected: street, square, roundabout, school playground and park, and for each typology a series of improvement solutions have been proposed. These, in turn, respond to 4 sub-objectives of the general strategy: Mitigation and Resilience, Renaturalisation, Urban Landscape and Accessibility, and Activity and Community.
The transversal axes of the project and priority aspects for Castellón City Council are adaptation to climate change and risk management, and the generation of a healthy urban environment. Therefore, the set of solutions is accompanied by a table indicating the impact of each one of them on health and the ecosystem services they produce, as well as guidelines for the implementation of these solutions: driving agent, implementation period and urban monitoring indicators.
