This publication appears in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH), detailing the outcomes and insights gained from +Actiu, a project implemented in a neighborhood of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, focused on promoting active lifestyles in a population with chronic diseases.

We are grateful for the support of our key funders: Barcelona City Council and Fundació la Caixa.

Article Highlights

The article explores the effectiveness of a Community of Practice (CoP) as a participatory strategy to promote physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary behavior in an urban setting, focusing on individuals with chronic diseases in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

The study brought together community members, health professionals, urban planners, and local authorities to co-design solutions. Key insights include:
  • The critical need for accessible, adaptable, and interconnected urban spaces to address barriers to physical activity.
  • The co-design of feasible neighborhood improvement proposals such as expanding shaded areas, creating pedestrian-friendly routes, and enhancing green spaces.
  • The demonstration that neighborhood design and accessibility are vital for reducing sedentary behavior and fostering active lifestyles, offering a replicable model for other cities aiming to foster health.
