Interview:The impact of the urban environment on our health

We are excited to share that our founder Marta Rofin was recently interviewed by MobiliCat, a leading magazine in Catalonia focused on mobility and public transport. During the conversation we discussed the crucial role of urban environments in our healthy life.

It is a striking fact that 89% of our health is determined outside the healthcare system. (GoInvo, 2017)  In other words, this means that our physical and mental wellbeing depends less on the proximity of a hospital but more on our daily environment and lifestyle.

At Healthy Cities, we focus on “urban determinants of health,” the aspects of the urban environment that either facilitate or prevent you from having a healthier life. We analyze these through five core categories (density, mobility, variety, landscape, and housing & energy) to understand their direct impact on both physical and mental health.

Throughout the interview, Marta emphasizes the importance of having a dual perspective when looking at our cities.

“From my point of view, a healthy city should include both things: an urban environment that facilitates your lifestyle, and measures at a more social, educational, and cultural level… We need both layers: more infrastructure and more use.” — Marta Rofin
