Barcelona La Industrial+ HIA

Client: Diputació de Barcelona

Location: Barcelona, Spain

Year: 2022

The La Industrial + project aims to transform the Escola Industrial, a 6 Ha site in the centre of Barcelona, into a greener, more sustainable, and innovative space. This Health Impact Assessment (HIA) evaluates the project’s potential effects on the health and wellbeing of the surrounding community.

Key Findings

  • Current health issues: the study identified air quality, noise, biodiversity, heat island effect, attention deficit, and general mental health as the primary health concerns in the area.
  • Urban Determinants of Health: the analysis revealed a lack of green and blue spaces, poor connectivity to green spaces, and high motorised traffic as the main urban issues impacting health.
  • Project proposals and health impacts: the analysis of La Industrial + project led to proposals for transforming both the built and non-built environment. These changes are expected to positively impact health by increasing green coverage, improving walkability and cyclability, reducing traffic, and enhancing access to green spaces.

Conclusions

By aligning its strategy with current health concerns and prioritising healthy urban design principles, the La Industrial + project has the potential to significantly improve the health and wellbeing of the surrounding area.
